How to Write Useful PDF Review Comments
“Unclear” is a reaction, not useful feedback. The author still has to guess what confused you and how much revision the passage needs.
Comment On The Reader Effect
A strong review comment contains three parts:
- What you observed
- Why it matters
- What would resolve it
This paragraph introduces “eligible accounts” without defining the term. A customer may not know whether trial accounts qualify. Please add the eligibility rule here or link to the definition in section 2.
The comment stays focused on the document, not the writer.
Distinguish Required Changes From Suggestions
Label the level of feedback:
Required: The total here differs from the approved budget.
Suggestion: Consider moving this example before the technical explanation.
That distinction prevents the author from treating taste as a blocker or overlooking an actual error.
When the review happens in a PDF, place the comment next to the relevant text. Docento supports text annotations and stamps directly in the browser, which is useful when you do not need a full desktop PDF suite.
Rewrite Comments That Sound Personal
If your first reaction is “this makes no sense,” preserve the issue and change the framing:
Rewrite this document comment as specific, respectful feedback. Identify the reader problem, explain its impact, and request a concrete revision. Do not weaken factual or compliance concerns.

Useful comments shorten the revision cycle because the author can act without scheduling another meeting.
