How to Write Clear Recipes and Kitchen Notes

RecipesInstruction WritingHome Organization

A recipe is a small operating procedure with better snacks. If another person cannot reproduce the dish, the notes are memories rather than instructions.

List Ingredients In The Form Used

Write:

2 medium onions, finely diced

not:

onions

Include units, preparation, and substitutions that you have actually tested. Keep metric and imperial units consistent.

Put Steps In Working Order

Mention preheating, chilling, or resting before the reader reaches that point. Use one main action per step:

  1. Heat the oven to 190 C.
  2. Whisk the eggs and sugar for two minutes.
  3. Fold in the flour until no dry streaks remain.

Add Sensory Cues

Ovens, pans, and ingredients vary. A cue can be more useful than time alone:

Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until the edges are golden and the centre springs back lightly.

Do not invent food-safety guidance. Use current authoritative sources for safe temperatures, storage, allergies, and specialist diets.

Record What Changed

After cooking, note batch size, equipment, substitutions, and what you would adjust. Date the version if the recipe keeps evolving.

Use AI As An Editor, Not A Food-Safety Authority

A rewrite tool can organize your tested notes:

Rewrite these cooking notes as a recipe. Separate ingredients and numbered method, keep all quantities and temperatures unchanged, put preparation in the right order, and preserve my sensory cues. Do not add ingredients, cooking times, allergy claims, or safety advice.

That same discipline applies to workplace instructions. See how to write checklist instructions for a more formal version.
