How to Write a Short Professional Bio
A short professional bio has to answer three questions quickly: who are you, what do you do, and why are you relevant here?
Match The Bio To Its Destination
A conference bio may emphasize speaking expertise. A proposal bio should explain why you are qualified for the project. A company website bio can include your role and broader focus.
Do not send the same 180-word biography everywhere and ask an organizer to find the useful part.
Use A Simple Four-Part Shape
- Name and current role
- Area of expertise
- One or two credible proof points
- Current focus or relevant personal detail
Example:
Ana Costa is a service designer who helps public-sector teams simplify complex digital journeys. She has led research and design programs across healthcare and local government in Portugal and the UK. Her current work focuses on accessible forms and assisted digital services.
That version is 49 words and gives the reader something concrete.
Remove Inflated Language
Words such as visionary, renowned, dynamic, and world-class need exceptional evidence. Most bios improve when they use job nouns and active verbs instead.
Before:
Daniel is a passionate and innovative thought leader with extensive experience.
After:
Daniel leads data governance programs for banks and insurance companies.
Keep A Master And Several Lengths
Maintain accurate versions at roughly 30, 60, and 120 words. Update them together when your role or focus changes.
Use this rewrite instruction:
Rewrite these facts as a third-person professional bio of no more than 60 words. Include my current role, specialty, relevant evidence, and current focus. Use plain language. Preserve names, employers, qualifications, and dates. Do not add praise, seniority, awards, or clients.
