ChatGPT For Word: What It Reads Before It Drafts Anything

ChatGPT no longer needs a browser tab next to Word. As of September 17, 2026, OpenAI’s Office add-in puts a ChatGPT sidebar directly inside Word, on every ChatGPT plan including Free. You open the sidebar, describe what you need, and it drafts, revises, summarizes, or reformats without you copying a single line out of the document.

That convenience comes from the sidebar reading more than the sentence you asked about. Before you turn it on for a client contract or a document with anything sensitive above the section you are working in, it is worth knowing exactly what “context” means here.

What Actually Shipped

The add-in installs from the Microsoft Marketplace, the same distribution path OpenAI already uses for its Excel and PowerPoint integrations. Once it is running, the sidebar can turn rough notes into a structured draft, summarize a document you did not write, revise a selection you highlight, proofread what is already there, and apply consistent heading and formatting changes, all from one prompt box next to the page. OpenAI documents the rollout, the plan-by-plan pricing, and the admin controls in its ChatGPT release notes.

The rollout reached every ChatGPT tier at once, not just paid plans, which means a huge number of people who have never paid for ChatGPT now have a drafting tool built into the app they already write in every day. Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts run Word on token-based pricing at the same API rates as the underlying model, drawing from the usage allowance those plans already share with other premium features.

Reading A Selection Is Not The Same As Reading The Document

This is the distinction that matters. A tool that only sees the paragraph you highlight and asked it to rewrite has a narrow, predictable input: that paragraph, nothing above it, nothing below it. A tool sitting in a sidebar next to an open document can use the whole document as context for anything you ask it to do, because the document is already open in the same window the add-in runs in.

Practically, that means asking the sidebar to “tighten the intro” on a ten-page proposal gives it access to everything else on those ten pages while it works, including the client’s name, pricing, terms you have not finalized, or a paragraph you meant to delete before sending. None of that is a flaw in the feature. Reading the surrounding document is exactly what makes “summarize this” or “match the tone of the rest of the page” work at all. But it means the boundary of what gets sent is the document, not the selection, and that boundary is easy to forget once the tool feels as ordinary as spellcheck.

Wrivio’s overlay draws that boundary differently on purpose. It only ever sends the text you paste or select into the overlay for a given rewrite, never the rest of whatever document, email, or chat window is open behind it. If you want a paragraph rewritten, that paragraph is what leaves your machine, and with the Local engine it never leaves at all.

What Changes On October 1

From September 17 through September 30, OpenAI is letting Business and Enterprise customers use its top writing-tier model in Word for free, with usage during that window not counting against the normal quota. That window matters less than what happens after it.

The date that actually changes exposure is October 1, 2026. Workspace admins on Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans can currently turn Word access on or off from the ChatGPT admin console, but starting that date, access is enabled by default. An admin who has not explicitly looked at that setting will find it on, not off, the first week of October. If your organization has any policy about what tools can touch client documents, this is the specific date to check the console rather than assume the prior setting held.

Before:

Hey, just checking on the invoice from last month, has this gone out yet? Also wanted to ask if we could push the March deadline a bit given the scope change.

After:

Following up on last month’s invoice: has it gone out yet? Separately, given the recent scope change, I would like to discuss moving the March deadline. Let me know a good time to talk.

If a sidebar drafted that second version from your notes while the same document had an unrelated client’s rate sheet three pages up, the model had access to that rate sheet while writing your follow-up, whether or not anything from it appears in the output. That is the tradeoff to weigh, not a reason to avoid the tool outright.

What To Check Before You Turn It On

A few minutes of setup avoids most of the risk here. Check what else lives in the documents you plan to use the sidebar on, since anything already typed above your cursor counts as available context. If you are an admin, look at the Word toggle in the console now rather than in October, and decide deliberately whether default-on is right for your team before OpenAI decides it for you. The same caution applies to any embedded assistant, not just this one: see how the same tradeoff shows up in Outlook’s own Copilot drafting tools.

A Wrivio Context for cleaning up meeting notes into a client update could say:

Rewrite these notes as a short client-facing update. Use only the facts in this text; do not add commitments, dates, or figures that are not already here. Keep the tone direct and professional. Flag anything that reads like an internal note rather than something meant for the client.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Space, paste just the notes you want turned into that update, and check the diff. Nothing else in the document you were working in gets pulled in, because nothing else was ever sent.

Common Questions

Is ChatGPT for Word actually free to use?

Yes, the add-in is available on every ChatGPT plan including Free, though Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts pay token-based rates against their existing usage allowance once the September promotional period ends.

Does the sidebar see the whole document or just what I select?

It can use the whole open document as context for tasks like drafting or summarizing, not only the text you highlight, which is why anything sensitive elsewhere on the page is effectively available to it while it works.

What happens on October 1, 2026?

Word access for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu switches from admin-controlled to enabled by default, so any organization that has not reviewed the setting in the admin console will have it turned on automatically.

Is this different from Copilot in Word?

Yes. Microsoft’s own Copilot is a separate product built into Office; this is OpenAI’s ChatGPT running as an add-in inside Word, distributed through the Microsoft Marketplace rather than being a native Microsoft feature.

How do I get the same drafting help without exposing the rest of my document?

Use a tool that only sends the text you explicitly select or paste, rather than one that reads the surrounding document by default; that is the model Wrivio’s overlay follows for both its Cloud and Local engines.

Download Wrivio for Windows to draft and rewrite from a hotkey overlay that only ever sees the text you give it, not the rest of the document open behind it.
